World Lakes Database
new counter since 2002.10.1.
- Survey of the State of World Lakes -
You have four options to access the Lake Database.
Since the International Lake Environment Committee Foundation (ILEC) was established in 1986, we have collected environmental and socio-economic data of important (significant for human beings) lakes and reservoirs around the world.
In 1988 ILEC started a data collection project entitled "Survey of the State of World Lakes" in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The aim of this project is to gather basic and important environmental information on natural and artificial lakes and its dissemination for their best use especially in developing countries and countries with economies in transition.
In collecting the information, we concentrated not only on general information, but also on physiographic, biological and socio-economic data. The main categories are as follows:
- A. Location,
- B. Description,
- C. Physical Dimensions,
- D. Physiographic Features,
- E. Lake Water Quality,
- F. Biological Features,
- G. Socio-ecomonic Conditions,
- H. Lake Utilization,
- I. Deterioration of Lake Environments and Hazards,
- J. Wastewater Treatment,
- K. Improvement Works in the Lake,
- L. Development Plans,
- M. Legislative and Institutional Measures for Upgrading Lake Environments, and
- N. Sources of Data.
We currently have data for more than 500 lakes from 73 countries. Here, you have two ways to access each data; index and maps. In the future, we will add search engines for quick across into any lakes and reservoirs in the database.
Update Request
In the collaboration for promotion of environmental conservation of the lakes of the world, ILEC and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) prepared this Data Book of World Lake Environments in three volumes (Volume 1: Asia and Oceania, 2: Africa and Europe, 3: Americas). With inputs from ILEC Scientific Committee members, many other scientists and researchers of the world and governmental and non-governmental agencies, the Data Book provides the most reliable information for lake environment conservation in the world.
However, such information must be updated and new information should be added for the Data Book to remain the most reliable information source. In this connection, ILEC would greatly appreciate your collaboration for the revision of the data by providing additional and/or latest information of the lakes covered by this database, including additional pictures of the lakes. Information on the lakes that are not covered would also be greatly appreciated.
The names of those who have provided assistance for the update will be duly acknowledged in the anticipated revised editions. Regretfully, due to financial constraints, no honorarium will be paid.
